5 reasons why smart venues host MORE wedding shows and events in 2018

The buzz around wedding fairs and open days is back, and it’s a couple-attraction technique that all wedding suppliers should look to incorporate in their 2018 marketing plan.

When it comes to showcasing wedding venues, nothing beats an online or offline advertising campaign like a real life tour of the venue itself.

Wedding fairs and open days have the unique, face-to-face ability to make newly engaged couples visualise their wedding day more vividly than any online experience could.

This kind of experienced based couple attraction technique is called experiential marketing – or event and engagement marketing – and it’s a technique that’s usually very expensive. That is, unless you ARE the wedding venue in question; in which case it’s a low cost, high impact way to increase wedding bookings in 2018 and beyond.

Creating a real wedding experience for loved-up couples

Experiential marketing – that is, immersing a potential client in a fun and memorable experience that reflects the product of service you’re offering – is an excellent way for wedding industry professionals to create a closer bond between engaged couples and your wedding venue or business.

Think about it… if a wedding venue or exhibiting wedding supplier stirs positive emotions in a bride or groom then they’re far more likely to remember and associate those great feelings with you and your wedding business; which in turn is likely to lead to more bookings.

Simple.

And it’s a client attraction tactic that wedding venues and suppliers are starting to adopt more often as the true effects of this marketing approach on bookings are realised.

A recent Bridebook survey found that of 2,200 newly engaged UK couples surveyed, 63% had attended wedding shows near where they lived and 40% of those couples had attended a wedding fair at the wedding venue they later went on to book.

In terms of return on investment, wedding venues do remarkably well out of open days and fairs, as the latest Bridebook survey proves.

But if you still need convincing, here are 5 additional benefits to choosing open days as a sustainable and impactful form of new client attraction in the wedding industry…

1. Group viewings for couples

Wedding venue staff save bundles of time by inviting groups of couples to view their venue and grounds all at once rather than having to dedicate their time to individual meetings.

Your time is valuable but if you want to increase bookings you must make couples feel special when visiting your wedding venue.

When you host a wedding fayre or open day, you can spend time decorating your venue and making it perfect for maximum impact, rather than having to work around existing events and guests – as is often the case when hosting individual meetings with couples.

2. Connecting with fellow suppliers and networking

Wedding fairs provide an opportunity for venues to promote existing, preferred wedding suppliers and meet new local suppliers.

Invite local wedding suppliers along to your open day and invite existing partner suppliers to set up a small stand offering information about their product or service.

When venues can offer couples approved supplier contacts they’re helping to take the stress of organising a wedding and all the little bits that need addressing away from the happy couple.

It’s essential that local wedding suppliers forge strong relationships with each other to help all non-conflicting parties build a presence online and secure more bookings. The alternative to this is to do nothing and let non-local wedding suppliers with bigger budgets dominate your online space and take local business away.

3. The scarcity complex

One key factor in the decision making process for soon-to-be brides and grooms is how desirable a particular venue or wedding supplier seems to be.

Subconsciously as human beings, we want what is perceived to be in demand.

By opening your doors to groups of couples rather than individuals, wedding venues and suppliers can often generate a kind of ‘battle for bookings’ as soon to be newlyweds compete to secure the best day for their big day.

4. Showing off your venue in a number of different themes/seasons

How great is it to be able to show newly engaged couples first hand how your wedding venue looks in spring, summer, autumn and winter? Now that’s a USP!

Nothing is more likely to evoke emotions in visiting couples than being able to serve mulled wine by an open fire at a wedding show in winter, or host games on the lawn during a summer wedding fayre.

Hedsor House & Park host an Indian Summer Inspired Wedding Showcase on 27th September where guests can enjoy a glass of fizz and wander around the grounds at their leisure; taking in the Indian inspired ceremonial seating in the domed hall and viewing first hand how their wedding breakfast could look in the recently refurbished ballroom.

5. Invite existing bookings along too

Couples love to revisit their venue whilst planning their big day and they love to show it off to family and close friends too. Why not invite them all along to your next open day for the sake of ‘decorative inspiration’ and, at the same time, boost attendee numbers and show couples potentially looking to book your venue how many other couples are already committed to planning their wedding with you.

This tactic leads us back to the scarcity complex as you’ll be showing newly engaged couples how many others have already chosen to book your venue for their big day.

Wedding fairs and open days are here to stay

Despite experiencing a bit of a dip in popularity a few years ago, the buzz around wedding fairs and open days is back, and it’s a couple-attraction technique that all wedding suppliers should look to incorporate in their 2018 marketing plan.

If saving time and increasing wedding bookings is on your agenda for 2018/2019, you’ll want to get in front of the people who matter today.

Bridebook’s 2018 Proposal Season Survey Results!

proposal season survey results

Charge your glasses – we are about to enter the ‘Proposal Season’! The perfect marriage of mulled wine and mistletoe spurs more engagements than any other time of year.

Leading wedding planning app Bridebook.co.uk can reveal new data showing that over a third of all engagements happen in the month of December (35%) with as many as 11% happening on Christmas Day (1 in 9) and 15% on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day (1 in 6). 27% will happen between Christmas Eve and Valentine’s Day, and 40% between December and Valentine’s Day.

Experts also predict that Christmas Day itself will be the most popular date to get engaged this year, followed closely by Christmas Eve and then New Year’s Eve.

Following a recent ‘Proposals Survey’ Bridebook.co.uk can reveal how ‘modern couples’ are being affected by ‘wedding technology’ and cultural shifts, and the implications that is having on the ‘traditional British wedding’. Though 89% of Gen Y and Gen Z couples already live together when they get engaged and they are marrying at an older age, the data shows they are adhering to some of the oldest romantic traditions when it comes to getting betrothed.

Hamish Shephard, founder of Bridebook.co.uk, says We expect there to be 125,000 proposals over the festive season. With law changes on the horizon and in the wake of two royal weddings at which we saw gospel choirs, plastic-free parties and fairground rides, couples are more inspired than ever to make proposals and weddings their own. While we see couples rejecting various long-standing traditions, we are also seeing many customary gestures continuing to stand the test of time, with new traditions being formed too.”

Of 350 couples surveyed:

  • 72% asked permission first.
  • 78% got down on one knee.

Shephard says, “This tradition is believed to have stemmed from knights bowing before their Lords, pledging their allegiance. The ‘modern couple’, though forward-thinking and supportive of gender equality, continues to pay homage to that tradition, however out-dated it may seem.”

  • 24% followed the tradition of the ring costing the equivalent of a month’s salary.
  • Of the other 86% who didn’t 42% of them paid more than one month’s salary.
  • 59% gave guidance beforehand on the sort of ring they wanted.
  • 30% had help from a parent and 21% had help from a best friend when it came to choosing a ring.
  • 26% designed or chose the final ring together.

Shephard says“The cost of an engagement ring being a month’s salary dates back to the 1930s, from an advertising campaign. The idea is so embedded in popular culture that most believe it far pre-dates that. The rising spend on rings ties in with the ever-increasing expectations and growing costs of weddings in total.”

  • 46% or recipients had dropped hints/asked for a proposal.
  • 65% had discussed getting married before the proposal.
  • Of those, 58% had discussed specific timeframes.
  • 72% prioritised making the proposal itself a surprise.
  • 53% prioritised making it personal. 62% were planned around a specific location.

a newly engaged couple looks happy at the camera!

Shephard says“Whilst an increasing number of couples are discussing getting married beforehand and coming to a mutual decision on when the time is right, an element of surprise is still the priority for most.”

  • 18% started to plan the wedding within the hour of the engagement.
  • Of Bridebook.co.uk’s 120,000 users currently planning weddings, 28% of them downloaded the app the day they got engaged.
  • 39% thought about a new fitness/diet regime that week!

Shephard says“Wedding planning spans an average period of 20 months, and couples are starting to make plans as soon as they get engaged due in-part to an awareness of the incredible choices available to them. Gen X and Gen Y couples have high expectations and they take their time to ensure every detail is perfect. The average couple now spends up to 864 hours planning their wedding, of which 1/5 will be during the working day!”

  • 53% did a selfie/social media post that day, marking a 12% increase from 3 years ago.
  • 18% filmed or photographed the proposal.

Shephard says‘Due to the rise in social media and technology, couples can share news of their engagement within minutes to their entire family and circle of friends. Hashtags such as #isaidyes #ido and #heasked continue to grow year-on-year. From the moment they get engaged to the day of their wedding their entire journey can be planned, executed and shared through apps.”

  • 27% now marry at a place of worship – an annual decrease of 2%.
  • Religious ceremonies have declined 50% in 20 years, from 127,000 to 62,000.
  • 86% still choose to wear a white wedding dress.
  • 92% do not reveal their dress to their fiancé until the day.
  • 75% ask their Father to walk them down the aisle.
  •  88% spend their last unmarried night apart.

Shephard says, “Couples are choosing to maintain various traditions, and new habits are being forged all the time too. In 2019 we expect to see further increases in the number of brides giving speeches (already at 18%), and 27% of couples will go on a ‘sten’ or ‘hag’ as well as their stag or hen. In addition, we are seeing a rise in the number of couples asking close friends or family members to conduct the ceremony, acting as the unofficial ‘officiate’.”

Hamish Shephard, Bridebook’s founder, summarisesThe millennial generation is rising to the challenge of curating perfectly unique proposals and completely unique weddings, exercising their ability to be creative. Motivated by putting on a great authentic experience they are no longer restricted to their local area with the internet, social media and apps, like ours, allowing them to explore every possibility at their fingertips.

Whether it is discovering that perfect proposal cliff-top for a viral-worthy photo or flying in a mariachi band from the other side of the country for the first dance, ‘modern couples’ want their engagements and their weddings to be hyper-personal and memorable, whilst still standing the test of time. More people than ever now pay for their weddings entirely themselves, and they are able to orchestrate their perfect celebration, without being restricted.”

  1. The satisfaction of their clients
  2. The quality of their product and experience
  3. Their ‘above-and-beyond’ attitude for their clients

Read on for more details!

When are the Awards running?

The Bridebook Wedding Awards are free to enter and run from the 1st November to the 14th December.  All UK wedding venues and suppliers are able to enter and are given the chance to win a prestigious Certificate of Excellence and to be crowned the 2019 Winner in their respective category.

The 2019 Certificate holders and the overall Winners will be announced on January 10th, 2019.

How can I enter the Awards?

All registered Bridebook suppliers are eligible to be awarded. To enter you simply need to start collecting reviews and testimonials on your Bridebook profile from your 2018 weddings. Reviews and testimonials can be submitted from couples, guests, parents, and suppliers. All reviews will be verified and accepted if legitimate.

What if I don’t have a Bridebook Profile, can I still enter?

The Bridebook Wedding Awards are for businesses and individuals listed on Bridebook only. But don’t worry, if you’re not currently registered with Bridebook we can fix that! It’s free and easy to create a Bridebook Business account and profile. Just head here, click sign up and you’re on your way. Once your account is up and running you can start gathering reviews!

How do I collect reviews?

Need a little guidance to get things started? Here are our suggestions for the best way to gather reviews.

Firstly, reflect on 2018 and think about who you really connected with. Then download your shareable assets here and copy and paste your Bridebook profile link ready for sharing.

The 5 best places to share your profile link and assets:

  • Send them in a direct email – a quick bcc to your couple and supplier contact list should have a dramatic impact on your review numbers.
  • Add it to your email signature – let your day to day emails do the work for you.
  • Post it on your website – make the most of your daily traffic.
  • Share it via your social channels – you have spent time building your following, now utilise it.
  • Ask your fellow suppliers – this year Bridebook is accepting supplier to supplier reviews. Ask your trusted supplier network to share some love (and do the same for them).

For your reviews to count they must be made directly to Bridebook profile so don’t forget to share your link!

Which reviews count?

All reviews and testimonials submitted by the couple, their family & friends and suppliers from a 2018 wedding up to December 14th.

All reviews submitted will be verified and posted within 24 hours.

How are the Bridebook Certificates of Excellence awarded?

The Certificates of Excellence are designed to recognise and celebrate suppliers who have contributed to the wedding industry with exemplary service, regardless of their size or the number of weddings they complete in a year.

  • Silver Bridebook Certificate of Excellence = At least 5 5-star reviews or testimonials from 2018 weddings.
  • Gold Bridebook Certificate of Excellence = At least 15 5-star reviews or testimonials from 2018 weddings.
  • Platinum Certificate of Excellence  = At least 30 5-star reviews and testimonials from 2018 weddings.

How are the supplier category winners chosen?

Each supplier category will have one 2019 Winner. (The only exception to this will be for venues, where each UK region will have one winner.)

Judging Process:

  1. All suppliers who have qualified for a Gold or Platinum Certificate will then automatically go through to the judging round.
  2. Bridebook experts will choose the 2019 Winners in each supplier category based on the following criteria:
    1. The satisfaction of their clients

How do you keep the awards fair?

Our main priority is to ensure that the awards are a fair and rewarding experience. Having taken feedback on board from previous Awards, The Bridebook Wedding Awards are the only awards that give both couples and suppliers a say. Who better to judge than those you work with every day!

Other efforts include having the Awards free and open to all venues and suppliers (not just those that pay an entry fee). Just as Bridebook is free to be listed on, we ensure all businesses within the wedding industry are fairly represented in throughout our Awards.

How do you make sure the reviews are authentic?

Bridebook has taken a number of steps to ensure only authentic reviews are shared, including:

  • Proprietary algorithms are in place to check for suspicious activity on all supplier reviews.
  • We ask for a wedding date, email address and an online authenticity agreement from every review participant.
  • Reserving the right to request evidence of any feedback submitted.
  • Manual investigation and verification process for suspicious activity.

Can I leave a review for another supplier?

Yes! Fellow supplier reviews count towards the Bridebook Wedding Awards. Give a little love to your professional network by leaving a review on their profile. We’re sure they’ll return the favour.

And do supplier reviews on my profile count?

Yes. The Bridebook Wedding Awards are the only Awards that welcome both couple and supplier reviews. Bridebook believes in collaboration over competition and we encourage all wedding industry professionals to support each other in this Awards.
